Joachim Stoltzenburg

Joachim Stoltzenburg (born February 16, 1921 in Schwerin ; † September 8, 2011 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German librarian and long-time director of the University Library in Konstanz.

Live and act

After his military service, Stoltzenburg studied law and political science at the University of Heidelberg from 1946 . He passed the first state examination in 1949 and the second state examination in 1953. In the same year he received his doctorate . This was followed by the library traineeship for the higher library service. From 1956 to 1964 he worked as a librarian at the Württemberg State Library . In 1964 he was seconded to the newly founded University of Konstanz to rebuild a university library, which he then headed until his retirement in 1986 (since 1976 as chief library director).

The professional work of Stoltzenburg is primarily associated with the successful establishment of a modern and efficient central university library in Konstanz (without decentralized libraries), the holdings of which were systematically and freely accessible from the beginning.
