Paul Kaegbein

Paul Kaegbein (born June 26, 1925 in Dorpat , Estonia ) is a German librarian . In Berlin and Cologne he became one of the great library scholars of the 20th century.

Life

Kaegbein studied history , German and historical auxiliary sciences . In 1948 he was at the Humboldt University of Berlin to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1952 he worked at the university library of the Technical University of Berlin and built one of the most modern library systems. He taught library science and documentation at the TH Berlin and the Free University of Berlin . In 1974 he was chairman of the German Library Association .

In 1975 he followed the call of the University of Cologne to the chair of library science. He expanded and networked the subject as information science . With Elmar Mittler , he founded the specialist journal Bibliothek: Forschung und Praxis , the first issue of which was published in 1977. Until 1981 he also headed the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1990 he retired . On his 65th birthday, the University of Cologne honored him with a ceremony and an extensive commemorative publication. He celebrated his golden doctoral jubilee in 1998 at the Humboldt University in an academic ceremony. He is an honorary member of the International Association of University Libraries . He edits the Baltic Bibliography of the Herder Institute (Marburg) .
