Engelbert Plassmann

Engelbert Plassmann (born March 23, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German lawyer , librarian and library scientist .

Life

Engelbert Plassmann, son of the banker Clemens Plassmann and grandson of the astronomer Joseph Plassmann , initially studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the universities of Berlin , Bonn , Freiburg im Breisgau and Cologne from 1954 to 1960 , then until 1964 law at the University of Würzburg . In 1967 he received his doctorate at the Ruhr University in Bochum under Paul Mikat with a thesis on the basic ideas of state church law of the German canonists at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries .

He completed his training as a librarian for the civil service and worked initially from 1971 at the Bochum University Library , later as the head of the library at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences . From 1975 to 1984 he was a member of the Bochum city council.

From 1975 he was initially a lecturer for library science at the University of Cologne, from 1977 also a lecturer at the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne . In 1982 he received a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences for Library and Documentation and was its rector from 1986 to 1990 . From 1989 to 1991 he was chairman of the Association of German Librarians .

In 1991 he moved to the University of Technology, Economics and Culture in Leipzig as the founding dean of the book and museum department , and in 1995 he was appointed to a professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He has been an emeritus since 2000 , but continues to take on teaching and examination tasks.

He published numerous essays and books, including the standard work Das Bibliothekswesen der Bundes Republik Deutschland (2nd edition 1983 together with Horst Ernestus , 3rd edition 1999 together with Jürgen Seefeldt). 2006 is the work Libraries and Information Society in Germany. An introduction by Engelbert Plassmann, Hermann Rösch, Jürgen Seefeldt and Konrad Umlauf has been published (Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 2006, ISBN 3-447-05230-9 ).

He has been married to Annemarie Plassmann since 1964 and has four children. Plassmann is a member of the Catholic student associations Bavaria Freiburg, K.St.V. Arminia Bonn and Julius-Echter in KV .
