Joseph Plassmann

Joseph Plassmann (born June 24, 1859 in Arnsberg , † August 23, 1940 in Münster ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Joseph Plassmann worked as a professor for astronomy in Münster. He is the child of Ernst Plassmann (1820–1876), lawyer and member of the Prussian House of Representatives , and Ottilie Sommer (1829–1900), daughter of the politician and lawyer Johann Friedrich Joseph Sommer . His brother was Otto Plassmann (1861–1932), first Lord Mayor of Paderborn . He was married to Maria Mittelviefhaus. He had eight children, including Clemens Plassmann and Joseph Otto Plassmann .

Joseph Plassmann studied mathematics and astronomy in Münster, Würzburg and Bonn; his teachers were Eduard Heis in Munster and Eduard Schönfeld in Bonn. During his studies he became a member of the KDStV Markomannia Würzburg in the CV in 1876 . To the Dr. phil. He received his doctorate in Bonn in 1904 with a thesis on the light change of the garnet star μ Cephei. After completing his studies, Plassmann worked as a teacher at high schools in Münster, Recklinghausen and Warendorf; from 1898 to 1924 at the Paulinisches Gymnasium in Münster. From 1899 he was lecturer for astronomy at the then Academy in Münster, from 1913 full honorary professor for astronomy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster; from 1921 to 1930 also head of the University Observatory in Münster.

In addition to a large number of publications on the observation of variable stars, Plassmann wrote a number of popular works, of which Celestial Science (1898, 2nd and 3rd edition 1913) is the best known. From 1906 to 1936, Plassmann was editor of the journal Die Himmelswelt (communications from the Association of Friends of Astronomy and Cosmic Physics), from 1909 to 1921 editor of the yearbook of (applied) natural sciences, and in 1922 of Hevelius - Handbook for Friends of Astronomy and Cosmic Physics .
