Gerd Presler (2004)

Gerd Presler (born November 27, 1937 in Hanover ) is a German theologian , religious educator and art scholar .

Life

Gerd Presler studied German language and literature, philosophy, Protestant theology, pedagogy and art history at the universities of Münster , Berlin and Copenhagen until 1958, after attending the grammar school in Oldenburg, Dortmund . At the theological faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University , he wrote a dissertation on the Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard under Ernst Haenchen . In February 1972 Presler took over a professorship at the Karlsruhe University of Education for systematic theology and religious education. As part of his theological research, he published on Martin Luther King, Jr. and Søren Kierkegaard. In 1996 he received his doctorate for the second time at the Philosophical Faculty of Heidelberg University with a thesis on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's sketchbooks .

The focus of his scientific work lies in the fine arts. His publications include books about the artist group Die Brücke , Art brut ( L'Art Brut. Art between genius and madness ) and about the New Objectivity ( painting of the New Objectivity. Splendor and misery of the 20s ).

Presler developed catalogs of works: prints by the Dangaster painter Franz Radziwill as well as the updated and expanded new edition of the prints by the Dane Asger Jorn . With catalog raisonnés of the sketchbooks by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Edvard Munch , Ludwig Meidner , Asger Jorn, Karl Hofer and Walter Stöhrer, as well as collaboration with Max Beckmann and Willi Baumeister , he laid the foundations for the terminology and systematic recording of this hitherto hardly explored branch of artistic creation. In The Sketchbook - Lucky Fall of Art History , published in 2017, he presented the scientific criteria for the characterization of the creative place “sketchbook” for the first time. The spectrum of investigations ranges from Degas , Munch, Kandinsky , Picasso , Kirchner to Marc , Arp , Beckmann, Schiele and Jorn to Baumeister, Oskar Schlemmer , Joan Mitchell , Paul Thek and Arnulf Rainer . In the art magazines art - Das Kunstmagazin und Weltkunst , Presler published extensive thematic reviews. He had research stays in Oslo, Silkeborg (DK), Washington, Davos, Geneva, Zurich, Albissola, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Stuttgart.

He wrote about the European copper engraving cabinets in Basel , Vienna, Berlin, Dresden (“Libraries of Seeing”); to the “Centers of New Objectivity” (Karlsruhe, Berlin, Hanover, Munich). The FAZ-Magazin published interviews on Pontus Hultén , Ernst Beyeler , Werner Haftmann , Thomas Grochowiak , Roman Norbert Ketterer and Eberhard W. Kornfeld .

Gerd Presler is an honorary member of the “Museumsforening Jorn”, Silkeborg, Denmark, founding and honorary member of the “Martin Luther King Center”, Werdau and a member of the “ Karl Hofer Committee ”, Cologne.
