Life

In 1981 she passed the Abitur at the modern language Bunsen-Gymnasium in Heidelberg . She then studied German and Protestant theology (teaching and full theology ) at the University of Heidelberg . During her first semester, she wrote concert reviews as a freelance worker for the Heidelberger Tageblatt , one of the Mannheimer Morgen magazine newspapers . Later she interrupted her studies to do a six-month internship in the church editorial office of Südwest-Fernssehen in Baden-Baden . She continued her studies with Eberhard Jüngel as a scholarship holder at the Evangelical Monastery of Tübingen and then at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Munich with Wolfhart Pannenberg . Since then she has been particularly interested in systematic theology . In 1988 she passed her state examination in Tübingen.

Schmoll works regularly on SWR radio (culture) and Deutschlandradio Berlin. On January 1, 1989, she joined the FAZ's political department (domestic policy) as an editor. There she was initially responsible for reporting on the Protestant Church, now in the Internal Policy Department for the entire educational policy and further for Protestant theology, orthodoxy and school policy.

Schmoll is a member of the Église reformée de France and is opposed to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification . On June 5, 2002, the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen awarded her an honorary doctorate. Schmoll gave her lecture on the subject of "The educational mission of the Protestant faculties".

In the discussion about the spelling reform of 1996 , contributions from FAZ editors played an important role. Schmoll in particular criticized the spelling reform in numerous articles. When she received the German Language Prize of the “Henning Kaufmann Foundation for the Care of the Purity of the German Language” in 2005 , the foundation praised her commitment “to the tried and tested spelling of German” and her “exemplary, elegant, high linguistic and stylistic German standards ".
