Georg Hensel

Georg Hensel (born July 13, 1923 in Darmstadt ; † May 17, 1996 there ) was a German theater critic .

Life

Georg Hensel was the son of a train driver. After passing high school in 1941, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , where he served until the end of the war .

Hensel began his journalistic work in his hometown at the Darmstädter Echo . Here he climbed the career ladder from young editor to theater critic and head of the feature pages . In 1975 he went to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a theater critic and became its chief critic. He stayed on until 1989, when he retired for health reasons.

He was awarded the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize in 1982 for his work and have fun in life in the FAZ about his own heart operation .

Hensel's theater reviews have appeared in several edited volumes. He was also the author of numerous books critical of theater. His work schedule gives an overview of the plays from antiquity to the present. The book was first published in 1966 and has been revised and expanded several times for numerous new editions. He also dealt with the playwright Samuel Beckett .

In addition, Hensel also excelled as a narrator. His first story, Nachtfahrt , was published in 1949. His memories, which appeared in 1994 under the title Lucky, were very well received by critics and readers.

Since 1984 he has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .

After a long illness, Hensel died at the age of 72 in his hometown of Darmstadt. Georg Hensel was married and had a son.
