Hans Rudolf Zöbeley

Hans Rudolf Zöbeley (born May 27, 1931 in Mannheim ; † December 5, 2007 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German composer , choir director and church musician .

life and work

The son of the Baden pastor Rudolf Zöbeley and Martha Bälz studied classical philology and media studies at the University of Heidelberg and musicology at the University of Church Music in Heidelberg . In 1955 he passed the state examination in Heidelberg and in 1957 the A examination as a full-time church musician . In 1963, Zöbeley received his doctorate from Thrasybulos Georgiades (1907–1977) in Munich with the work The Music of the Buxheimer Organ Book . In 1962 he was appointed lecturer at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich , and in 1979 he was appointed University Music Director of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Zöbeley played a decisive role in shaping three choirs: in 1960 he founded the Münchner Motettenchor and directed it for almost forty years, until his retirement in 1998. In addition, from 1962 to 1980 he headed the choir of the Munich Philharmonic . From 1969 to 2002 he was artistic and musical director of the Munich University Choir . In addition, until the summer of 1997 he worked as church music director at the Munich Church of St. Matthew , the preaching place of the regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria .

His son Martin Zöbeley is the leader of the group for early music in Munich.
