Johannes Matthias Michel

Johannes Matthias Michel (born October 1, 1962 in Stuttgart ) is a German composer , church musician and organist .

Life

Johannes Matthias Michel grew up in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance . He gained his first musical experience with his father, the composer and church musician Josef Michel, among others . After graduating from high school, she studied piano in Basel, then studied church music in Heidelberg and Frankfurt with the A-examination in 1988 (with Wolfgang Dallmann , Horst Hempel , Heinz Werner Zimmermann and Violeta Dinescu, among others ). Until 1992 he studied in the organ soloist class at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart with Ludger Lohmann with the completion of a soloist exam. From 1988 to 1998 Michel was district cantor in Eberbach am Neckar, head of the Eberbacher Kantorei and the Singschule Eberbach. Since January 1999 he has been church music director at the Christ Church Mannheim , district cantor for Mannheim and regional cantor for North Baden. Here he directs the Mannheim Bach Choir and the Mannheim Chamber Choir. In 2012, he was appointed honorary professor by the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts .

Michel is the chairman of the Karg Elert Society and editor of its publications (communications, yearbook, bibliography) and the composer of numerous mainly church music works ( Crucifixion , After Us the Flood , Swing and Jazz Organ Books , Swing and Jazz Choir Books , Das Canterville ghost , musical fair, etc.), which are mainly published by Strube-Verlag Munich. From 1989 to 2001 he has taught artistic organ playing at the University of Church Music in Heidelberg and since 2000 at the State University of Music in Mannheim . In addition to extensive concert activities, numerous recordings have been made at radio and television companies. Michel has made over 12 CD recordings on the organ and the Kunstharmonium (Karg-Elert Harmoniumworks Vol. 1–5, duos for piano and harmonium, organ works by Schlick, Bach, Karg-Elert, da Bergamo, Petrali, etc.) different labels have appeared.

He was married to the organ professor Christiane Michel-Ostertun , with whom he has three children. His great-grandfather is the writer Wilhelm Michel .
