Josef Michel

Josef Michel (born March 28, 1928 in Hamburg ; † March 25, 2002 in Radolfzell ) was a German church musician and composer.

Life

Michel studied church music in Heidelberg . First professional experience in Plankstadt and Schwetzingen . From 1951 to 1962 cantor in Gaggenau . From 1962 to 1972 he headed the church music department of the organ building company Ahlborn in Dransfeld . From 1972 to 1991 he was a music teacher and district cantor in Gaienhofen .

His compositional work focuses on choral music for church services (35 motets , cantatas and the like). More than 50 new sacred songs come from him, some of which have been included in the hymn books of various Protestant regional churches as well as in the hymn books of free, Swiss and American churches.

His “Gaienhofen Choir Book” achieved large editions and wide distribution. In terms of science and music theory, he has dealt with more than 60 essays on questions of the new sacred song, the profession of church musician, and questions about organs and church music.

Josef Michel is a grandson of the writer Wilhelm Michel . His grandmother Rosa Eva Michel b. After her divorce from Wilhelm Michel, Storck married the poet Karl Schloß , from whose relationship the actress Sybille Schloß came. He is the father of the church musician Johannes Matthias Michel .
