Karl Schloß (born January 6, 1876 in Framersheim , † January 3, 1944 in Auschwitz ) was a German entrepreneur and writer .

Life

Karl Schloß came from a Jewish family. He studied philosophy , art history and literary history at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich . Schloß frequented Munich bohemian circles and published literary texts in various literary magazines . In 1910 he gave up his literary activities for economic reasons and went to Alzey to work in the cigar shop of his father Adolph Schloß († 1918), which from 1912 also had its own production facility, and to take it over after his father's death. In 1914 he married Rosa Eva geb. Storck, the divorced wife of the writer Wilhelm Michel . Karl Schloß is the father of the actress Sybille Schloß , and three children from his wife's first marriage grew up in his house, the painter Heinz Michel , the KPD functionary Fritz Michel and Anny Michel, the mother of the church musician Josef Michel . In 1928 he moved the company's headquarters to Worms . The company had to be given up due to economic difficulties under the National Socialist rulers in 1937. In the same year Karl Schloß and his wife Rosel managed to escape to the Netherlands , where they lived in The Hague .

After the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, they were separated for a short time, and Jews had to leave The Hague in October. All other plans to emigrate, especially to the USA to her daughter Sybille, also failed. In autumn 1943 Schloß and his wife were arrested by the Gestapo and taken to Darmstadt . Since both marriages were considered a " privileged mixed marriage" under the Nuremberg Laws , which protected the Jewish husband from deportation , the National Socialist authorities urged Rosel Schloß to divorce, which she refused. Both spouses were sentenced to camp imprisonment and died in early 1944, each shortly after their delivery to the concentration camp , Karl Schloß in Auschwitz , Rosel Schloß on January 6, 1944 in Ravensbrück .

Karl Schloß was the author of poems and essayistic texts; during his years in Munich he was strongly influenced by Art Nouveau . In 2003 a selection from his complete works was published, which also includes the late poems composed during his exile and imprisonment. On November 5, 2006, the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, Land und Menschen editorial staff, broadcast an audio picture about Karl Schloß: “See how I am ruined”, author: Helga Keizer-Hayne. A few days later the synagogue was ceremoniously opened in Munich. In 2008 a “ stumbling block ” was laid in Worms in memory of the Schloss couple.
