Gaspare Aselli , also Gaspare Asellio (* around 1581 in Cremona , † April 14, 1626 in Milan ), was an Italian surgeon and anatomist .

Life

After studying at the University of Pavia in Milan, Aselli practiced as a surgeon, where he became professor of anatomy and surgery and an honorary citizen. From 1612 to 1620 he was the chief field surgeon of the Spanish Army in Italy. He discovered in 1622 by vivisection on dogs by chance by him as "milk containers" ( milk vein designated) lymph vessels in the mesentery. He was able to confirm his observation through systematic investigations. Aselli's research was published posthumously in Milan in 1672. The reception went comparatively quickly. The publication contained colored woodcuts to differentiate the different types of vessels. This was a first in the history of anatomy.
