Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA is a Norwegian shipping company operating worldwide. Morten Wilhelm Wilhelmsen founded the company on October 1st, 1861 in Tønsberg . Today it is headquartered in Lysaker . The company is currently managed by Jan Eyvin Wang (previously from 2003 to 2010 by Ingar Skaug). The company employs approximately 6,000 farm workers in approximately 400 offices in 73 countries. In addition to the actual shipping business, branches of business for car and RoRo logistics as well as for maritime services are operated. Wilh. With the Orcelle, Wilhelmsen had developed a design for a cargo ship that was to use wind power, solar energy and wave energy as propulsion.
On July 21, 2020, Wilhelmsen took over a 50 percent stake in Ahrenkiel Steamship . After the takeover, the company's fleet will comprise 72 container ships with a capacity of 1,000 to 3,000 TEU .
Core business
The shipping company of Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA focuses on the handling of rolling goods such as cars, trucks, agricultural machinery and other RoRo loads with one of the world's largest fleets of car transporters and RoRo ships . This includes almost 120 of its own and chartered ships, which are used by companies such as Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines , Eukor and American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier . The annual transport volume includes around 5 million vehicles and 12 million m³ of non-containerized cargo.
Incidents at sea
In August 2001, the shipping company hit the headlines because of a diplomatic dispute, the so-called Tampa affair , between the governments of Australia, Norway and Indonesia over the whereabouts of 438 refugees on board the Tampa .
On December 14, 2002, the shipping company Tricolor sank after a collision with the container ship Kariba in the English Channel .
Plane crash
On September 8, 1989, Partnair flight 394 crashed on its flight from Oslo to Hamburg . All 55 people on board, 50 employees of the shipping company and 5 crew members, were killed. The Convair CV-580 machine had been chartered by the shipping company and was supposed to bring employees to Hamburg for a ship christening. The machine crashed into the Skagerrak near the municipality of Hirtshals off the Danish coast . As a result of this crash, the shipping company suddenly lost fifty employees, some of them managerial staff.
