Joseph Kane (actually Jasper Joseph Inman Kane , often Joe Kane ; born March 19, 1894 in San Diego , California , † August 25, 1975 in Santa Monica , California) was an American film director who mainly directed westerns .

Life

Kane was a musician in his first profession and earned his living as a cellist until 1926 . Then he reoriented himself professionally and turned to film editing . He mainly edited silent film westerns; In the mid-1930s he was hired as a director for production companies such as Mascot and other small companies. After these were absorbed by Republic Pictures , he became one of the company's regular directors. He was primarily responsible for the action-packed western program. He stayed with Republic until the studio was closed in 1958.

Initially, he mainly shot serials , later also full-length feature films with many of the western stars of the time such as Gene Autry , Roy Rogers and the up-and-coming John Wayne at the beginning of his career. Over the years, the budgets have narrowed; after Republic ended, Kane found work on television and directed numerous episodes of popular western series such as The Man Without a Colt , At the Foot of the Blue Mountains and A Thousand Miles of Dust . Occasionally he still submitted works for the cinema.
