The Stranig branch church in the Carinthian municipality of Kirchbach im Gailtal is dedicated to John the Baptist . The church belonging to the Roman Catholic parish Reisach was formerly an independent parish church. The church, first mentioned in 1040/1050, was expanded in 1562.

Building description

The originally Romanesque nave was raised and lengthened in the late Gothic . The four-bay nave and the single-bay choir with a three-eighth end merge into a single structure. A sacristy is built on the south side . The tower with a pointed gable helmet rises above the western wall gable. The church is entered through the pointed arched, profiled west portal, the door of which has been renewed.

In the nave and choir, a groin vault rests on delicate, profiled wall templates. The round arched triumphal arch is marked above the top with the year of construction 1562 and the restoration dates 1842, 1910, 1929 and 1953. Two pointed arched windows in the end of the choir and another on the south wall of the nave give the church interior light. A portal with a straight lintel provides access to the square, groin-vaulted sacristy. The two massive, square pillars in the entrance yoke form the tower substructure. In the yoke in front of it stands the baroque wooden gallery on wooden pillars. The mural on the south wall of the choir depicting poor Lazarus is from the end of the 16th century.

Facility

The high altar, made around 1670/1680, consists of an aedicula over a small base, a blown volute gable with a small aedicula as an attachment and a rococo tabernacle . The middle picture from the 19th century shows John the Baptist, the top picture from the 17th century shows Christ. The statues of the martyrs Stephen and Laurentius stand on the side on consoles .

The left side altar from the end of the 17th century bears the figure of St. Joseph , which is flanked by the statues of St. Florian and John Nepomuk . The pulpit basket from the last quarter of the 18th century is placed on the floor. According to the inscription, the organ was built in 1762 by "Elias Protzer in Fillach". A baroque baptismal font with a small baptismal group , a statue of Our Lady from the end of the 17th century and late baroque peasant pictures of the Stations of the Cross complete the furnishings of the church.
