Arleen Whelan (born September 1, 1916 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † April 7, 1993 in Orange County , California ) was an American actress . She gained notoriety through her leading role in John Ford's Who the Sun Is Smiling .

Life

Whelan grew up in her native Salt Lake City and worked as a manicurist at a beauty salon after graduating from high school. There she was discovered by the film director H. Bruce Humberstone , who cast her in 1938 after screen tests in the female lead role of Jean MacDonald in the film Kidnapped by 20th Century Fox . In 1939, according to contemporary reports, she was considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind , which eventually went to Vivien Leigh .

Over the next few years, more than 30 other film roles followed, as well as occasional appearances in television series from the 1950s. She embodied her best-known roles in two films by John Ford : In 1939 she was seen in The Young Mr. Lincoln alongside Henry Fonda as the young wife of a murder accused, in 1953 she played Lucy Lee Lake in Who the Sun Is Smiling , who is Ford's personal Favorite work counts. In addition to her film career, Whelan has also appeared in plays on Broadway . In 1962 she ended her film career after 24 years.

Arleen Whelan was married three times. From 1940 to 1943 with the actor Alex D'Arcy , from 1943 to 1953 with the film distributor Hugh Owen and from 1960 to 1961 with Dr. Warren O. Cagney. All three marriages ended in divorce and remained childless. Whelan last lived in Orange County, California, where she died of a stroke on April 7, 1993 at the age of 76 . She was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City .
