action

Spain in the early 1580s, at the time of Philip II. The king's troops have moved into the village of Zalamea. Captain Don Alvaro is quartered in the house of Pedro Crespo and his two children. Alvaro is very interested in the proud daughter Isabel, but she gives him the cold shoulder. This makes the captain, who is not used to rejections, angry, and he thinks he can take the beautiful Isabel by force. In the eyes of Pedro, this rape also means a loss of honor for him, and so he, who has meanwhile been appointed judge of Zalamea, lets the violent captain sit in court.

Alvaro's commander, Generals de Lope, warns Pedro not to go too far. But the judge from Zalamea is unimpressed, and so the trial ends with a death sentence against the molester Don Alvaro. De Lope then tries to challenge Pedro Crespo's judicial competence. Without having announced himself, King Philip suddenly appears in the village and confirms the death sentence, but lets his will for a pardon shine through. But it is too late, the verdict was already carried out shortly before the royal arrival and the rapist was executed with a garrote .
