A glass of water is a German silent film from 1923 by Ludwig Berger based on the theater play of almost the same name by Eugène Scribe .

action

London at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century. Queen Ann's followers split into two parties: one side, led by Lord Bolingbroke, is pushing for peace talks and a quick reconciliation with the war opponent France; the other side, however, advocates a continuation of the hostilities under the leadership of the influential Duchess of Marlborough. The still very young and politically inexperienced Queen Anna herself is not yet sure how she will decide. To win them over, each of the two parties, Bolingbroke and Marlborough, tries to manipulate the Queen in a game of intrigue.

Another conflict at court is rather amorous: Queen Anna as well as the Duchess Marlborough show great interest in the young and attractive officer John Masham, who in turn is madly in love with the pretty maid Abigail. Lord Bolingbroke, a shrewd politician and schemer as well as connoisseur of human weaknesses, is the only one to keep track of this chaos of emotions and deliberately pulls the strings in the implementation of his plans. In the end, things go as he planned: a peace treaty with France is concluded.

Reviews

"Dr. Ludwig Berger also took care of the production. Still young in film, he has a well-established name in Berlin's theater and literary life. He now has it in the cinematic realm. (...) He is the sovereign master of light and shadow, he creates visual effects of impressive beauty and eloquent individuality. The images he forms have the atmosphere of a Watteau, a Reynol. And the brilliant technical skill that is reflected in all of this remains completely unobtrusive; only an expert can judge what kind of service is here. (...) Rarely does one see such a finely tinted representation, one that appears so eloquent with such delicate, unobtrusive means. A classic ensemble game in which everything and everything fits naturally. Mady Christians, Lucie Höflich, Helga Thomas: all three women are full of charm. Full of mimic movement. Fully relaxed naturalness. Hans Brausewetter gets the same success that he was allowed to record in the same role at the Deutsches Theater. All other male roles (namely Rittner) performed as cabinet pieces. The result of serious work was an overall performance full of grace and grace. A film that justifies speaking of the art of cinematography. "

“From the Scribe comedy“ A Glass of Water ”(1923), a tried and tested stage play, Ludwig Berger created a large-format comedy that was both fulfillment and promise. This man of the pen and the stage has not only visual skills, but above all culture and taste. "
