Henry Stuart (born February 1, 1885 as Court Henry Eduard Hess in Cairo , Egypt , † after 1942) was a British-Swiss actor , film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

The son of a British colonial official came to England shortly before the turn of the century and lived temporarily in Paris . He attended the Munich Art Academy with the intention of becoming a painter. Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War he was in Vienna , where he made his first contact with film people.

He spent the war in England, then returned to Germany and began his career as a silent film actor here in 1922. As a rule, he personified perfect gentlemen and noble lovers. In the classic Die joudlose Gasse he played the bank clerk Egon Stirner, for whose favor his fiancée, the destitute Maria Lechner ( Asta Nielsen ), murdered a supposed competitor.

In 1928 he went to India and directed the film The Ring of the Bajadere there . In the sound film, Stuart remained largely unemployed. He became a Swiss citizen and in 1941 produced a sound film version of Der Ring der Bajadere under the title Krishna. Adventure in the Indian jungle in German cinemas. He played in Berlin , especially at the English Theater of German Actors, and worked for the radio and as a manuscript and title translator.
