Franz Jackson

Franz R. Jackson (born November 1, 1912 in Rock Island (Illinois) ; † May 6, 2008 in Niles (Michigan) ) was an American jazz musician ( alto saxophonist , clarinetist and flutist).

Franz Jackson was a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene of the 1930s and 1940s, working with Jelly Roll Morton , François Moseley, and Ruben Reeves during that time . In 1938 he got the position of Ben Webster in the band of Fletcher Henderson , later he belonged to the groups of Fats Waller (with JC Higginbotham and Red Allen ) and played with Roy Eldridge , Earl Hines , Billy Eckstine and Louis Armstrong . In 1957 he formed his Original Jass All-Stars ; In 1961 recordings were made for Riverside Records in the series "Chicago Living Legends" with trumpeter Bob Shoffner , trombonist John Thomas , pianist Rozelle Claxton , banjo player Lawrence Dixon , tuba player Bill Oldham and drummer Bill Curry .

As one of the last survivors of this era, he was active until the 1990s. He founded Jazz Entertainers in 1980 , toured Europe in 1981 and played in various jazz clubs in Chicago, such as "Joe's Bebop Café" and "Andy's". In 1996 he received the "Jazz Master Award" from Arts Midwest .
