Rozelle Claxton

Rozelle Claxton (* 5. February 1913 in Memphis (Tennessee) , † the thirtieth March 1995 in Lake Forest (Illinois) ) was an American jazz - pianist and arranger.

Rozelle Claxton already had small appearances on weekly radio programs at the age of 15; As a professional musician, he began at 17 with Jimmie Lunceford and Clarence Davis , whose band worked with WC Handy . As a pianist he worked in Kansas City as a freelance musician for Harlan Leonard in the 1930s, where he received lessons in arrangement; he also played with Bennie Moten and Ernie Fields . He also appeared as a soloist in Chicago , worked with Eddie South and was a short-term substitute pianist in the Count Basie Orchestra . In the 1940s he worked with Walter Fuller , George Dixon , Earl Hines , Red Norvo , Jimmie Lunceford, and Andy Kirk .

In the early 1950s he studied in Chicago; In 1954 he obtained his master's degree. He also accompanied singers like Pearl Bailey . From 1959 he worked with Franz Jackson's Original Jass All-Stars until the 1960s. As a companion of Pearl Bailey he went on tours with her from 1978 to 1983, otherwise he appeared as a soloist as an organist and pianist in Chicago.
