Men without a Profession is a German silent film from 1929 by and with Harry Piel .

action

Harry Perol, who is in the service of the Paris police, is on the trail of an international girl trafficking ring. He was employed as an English steward on a mail ship, where he soon identified the South American José Servantes as the head of the gang. On arrival at the port, Harry hands the villain over to his colleagues and decides to pretend to be servantes in Marseille so that he can first track down and then arrest those behind. Through this masquerade he gets to know the young Madeleine, who got caught up in the girl trafficking ring by the Servantes supplier René Duval. She had taken a (of course not serious) marriage proposal from Servante and is delighted to meet her “future” in Harry Perol.

Duval does not know what Servantes looks like, and is therefore pleased that he can pay his respects to the unknown gang leader, now Harry Perol. However, some of the girl traffickers who call themselves "men without a profession" are starting to get suspicious because Harry hugs the pretty Madeleine all too often. Soon, however, Harry no longer has time for grated liquorice with Madeleine, which he has had an eye on, but has to worry about putting Duval and his people, all of Servantes' assistants, to rest their dirty work. In Harry's absence, a gang member, the "beautiful Alfons", uses the opportunity to put Duval under pressure. He himself has a great interest in Madeleine and asks Duval to “sell” her to him.

Duval agrees, blackens Harry properly in front of Madeleine and introduces Alfons as a wealthy banker. Madeleine has doubts about Harry / Servante. She turns away from him and willy-nilly to the greasy Alfons. Harry's research, however, has provided him with some information: A ship with a number of girls is soon to leave Marseille for their "buyers". Harry arrives in time to redeem and break the gang. Madeleine and the other girls are rescued, and everything is fine again between him and his lady of the heart, who now knows that he is absolutely decent and a cop.

Production notes and background

Men without a job was filmed in the DLS ateliers in Staaken near Berlin (studio recordings) and in Marseille (outdoor recordings) in spring 1929 and premiered on August 15, 1929 in the UFA-Palast am Zoo . It was Piel's only silent film, of which a sound version was made, but the premiere of which cannot be determined.

The film structures were designed by Robert Neppach ; Rudolf Sieber , Marlene Dietrich's husband , assisted the director Piel. The Dane Eigil Wangøe was a still photographer.

Reviews

Siegfried Kracauer said: Piel “puts together an acting milieu of pimps and girls, in which he plucks laurels as a secret police officer. Colportage film, sure, but it's skillfully crafted and has some nice improbabilities. One of its main merits is that it unfolds against original backgrounds. Marseille as it is, intervenes everywhere. "

The Deutsche Zeitung scoffed: "Harry Piel is the most selfless savior in need you can imagine."
