action

The palace of Princess Blankenstein and Baroness Orlowska was broken into. The thief stole a lot of cash and jewelry. The detective Joe Deebs is called in, but despite all his experience and investigations, he does not get very far in this case; it is a mystery to him how the thief and burglar proceeded. Then an idea occurs to him: Obviously, the crook has worked his way up into the house underground, from the catacombs.

During his further investigation, Deebs comes across a certain Baron Bassano, who appears to be the mastermind behind this series of crimes. Bassano let a crook and his accomplice, the daughter of the cathedral towerer Krüger, who is only called "the rat" and lives with her boyfriend in the catacombs, do the dirty work. While Deebs is able to arrest Bassano, the intruder and "the rat" flee into the cathedral and throw themselves down from the church tower.
