How I Became a Detective is a 1916 crime film in the Joe Deebs film series .

Joe Deebs explains to his friends how he became a detective. Shortly thereafter, his bride is arrested on suspicion of murdering her biological father, who was gone for a long time. Her mother's husband is just her stepfather. In order to free them from this suspicion, Deebs turns to this case immediately. He finds out that a wooden picture was stolen from the dead man. A small dog puts Deebs on the trail of a circus performer. Disguised as a clown, Deebs is recognized by the suspect and locked in a cellar. Despite a fire that breaks out, Deebs is rescued and the killer arrested. But his bride, who wanted to help him, dies in the fire.

The film is four acts long . It was produced by May-Film GmbH (Berlin). The film was shot in August and September 1916 at the Busch Circus in Berlin. A fire broke out in the circus during filming. The film went through censorship in August 1916, the premiere took place in October 1916 or on November 3, 1916 in the Tauentzienpalast .

The Munich police did not allow an announcement as a detective film (No. 22510, 2511, 22512, 22513).
