Abraham Löwenberg, father of Ruth Löwenberg, is charged with murder and found guilty. His daughter then hires out as a governess in the big city. There she also makes a career as a singer. Count Marlitz, who falls in love with her, marries her. She gives him a son. When the father comes out of prison, she gives her husband the choice between him and her father. She decides in favor of her father and leaves her son to her husband. Years later, Marlitz is married again, the son falls ill. The stepmother decides that he needs an operation. Ruth, who in the meantime has been employed as an educator for her son, reveals herself and prevents the operation. The countess then gets a divorce and Ruth takes care of her son. The Count and Ruth are now forever united.
