The Panther Bride is a silent German crime film from 1919 in the Joe Deebs film series . Directed by Leo Lasko . The detective Joe Deebs is portrayed here for the first time by Carl Auen .

action

The young Ellen Hansen has left her husband, bank director Erik Hansen, at night and in a fog and asks him in a letter left behind not to investigate her whereabouts. Hansen, who is very worried, does not care about her request and instead asks master detective Joe Debbs to find out the whereabouts of his wife. When the latter receives a picture of that same Ellen, he is all the more astonished: he knows the young lady by the name Ellen Duffoir, because he once had a relationship with her himself. She too had left him head over heels in a similarly mysterious way, shortly before they were both about to get engaged. Deebs follows in Ellen's trail, which leads to India. In fact, he can track her down and get Ellen to be hypnotized. In this way he learns the background to their behavior.

Ellen once lived with her father, Dr. Duffoir, in India and was supposed to be sacrificed by a mysterious Indian sect as "pure innocence" to a deity named "Panther" as his bride. At that time, however, a servant was able to fetch her father, who started an attempt at rescue. But Ellen was injured during the scuffle with a dagger whose blade was moistened with a long-acting poison. As a result of the injury, Ellen developed skin spots; this rash closely resembles small panther pictures. This clinical picture appeared for the first time shortly before Ellen's engagement to Deebs, after three years of marriage to Erik Hansen for the second time. Deebs hypnotizes Ellen to suggest not to leave the country under any circumstances, while Deebs has his Indian detective colleague Douglas procure an antidote. In fact, Ellen's healing succeeds, and Joe Deebs brings his ex-bride back to her current husband safely.

criticism

“The plot increases from act to act until it finds a satisfactory solution through hypnotic influence. Beautiful equipment and brilliant directing skills bring the interesting material to full advantage, which is enhanced by a touch of humor. "
