Friedrich Weinmann (born December 15, 1885 in Berlin ; † July 16, 1929 there ) was a German cameraman of silent films .

Life

Weinmann attended the Academy of Graphic Arts in Dresden. In 1908 he turned to film. Max Reinhardt hired him in 1913 as a cameraman for his two film projects A Venetian Night and The Island of the Blessed . Until 1914 he worked for several comedies by the director Carl Wilhelm .

During the First World War Weinmann worked for the Image and Film Office . As a photographer and cameraman, he took aerial photographs. After the war he continued his work in feature film production. He found the concentration of the chamber feature film and photographed Lupu Pick's shards (1921) , among others . The camera work for Carl Theodor Dreyer's Die Gezeichen (1922) testifies to the maturity of his skills. Weinmann was able to express his penchant for the semi-documentary style in 1924/25 as one of the cameramen of the staged documentary films Miracles of Creation and Paths to Power and Beauty .

His work in the second half of the 1920s is characterized by entertainment films. He was also behind the camera in two film adaptations based on Gerhart Hauptmann : together with cameraman Frederik Fuglsang in Friedrich Zelnik's Die Weber (1927) and in a film adaptation of The Beaver Fur (1928). Weinmann's last completed film work is Lupu Picks Napoleon on St. Helena (1929).

In the early summer of 1929 he was so badly kicked (and injured his lungs) by a horse while filming that he had to be hospitalized immediately. His work on Johannes Meyer's film High Treason was taken over by his colleague Carl Hoffmann .

Weinmann's son Siegfried Weinmann also worked as a cameraman, especially in the 1930s.
