The Secret Courier is a German silent film -Gesellschaftsdrama from the year 1928. Directed by Gennaro Righelli play Ivan Mosjukin and Lil Dagover the leading roles. The story is based on the novel Rot und Schwarz (1830) by Stendhal .

action

France, shortly before 1830. Julien Sorel takes up the post of secretary to the mayor of Verrières, Monsieur de Rénal. He begins a liaison with his wife, Thérèse de Rénal, which he ultimately regards as just one step on the way up. In fact, he goes into this affair with some calculation and leaves the attractive lady when the powerful Marquis de la Môle shows him the possibility of a further rise. Julien separates from Madame again and follows the Marquis to Paris, in the hope that one day he will be able to marry his daughter Mathilde. She doesn't have the mayor's wife class, but is completely in love with the former head of house.

Deeply hurt by Julien's behavior, Thérèse de Rénal decides to take revenge on Julien and permanently damage his reputation when the Marquis asks for respect. In a letter to the Marquis, she gives her husband's former secretary a very bad report. He is a dishonorable fellow who only has the lady's money in mind when choosing his partner. Beside himself with anger, Sorel travels back to Verrières and shoots his former lover. For this attempted murder he is supposed to lose his head under the guillotine. When the citizen-king Louis-Philippe I took office , he escaped his death sentence and entered the service of the monarch. When Julien finally gets into the turmoil of subversive activities, he is hit by a bullet from a barricade fighter. Sorel dies in the arms of his bride.

Production notes

The film shot in the Terra Glass House does not stick too faithfully to the novel. The secret courier passed the film censorship on October 19, 1928, was 2928 meters long, spread over seven acts, and was premiered on October 23, 1928 in the Mozart Hall in Berlin.

Otto Erdmann and Hans Sohnle created the film structures, Marcel Hellmann took over the production management.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Despite the initial lengths, the subject, which does not always correspond to the history, has strong effects, especially towards the end of the film. The presentation is excellent, to which the skilful directing deserves a significant share, as well as a careful presentation and beautiful exterior shots complete the favorable overall impression. "

“… A film that masters the means of narration, with some particularly well-arranged scenes such as the celebration when Sorel is raised to the nobility, which alone would be absolutely worth seeing. An outstanding film, as it could only be made shortly before the great upheaval caused by the sound film. "
