Jean Dax , born in Gontran Théodore Louis Henri Willar (born September 17, 1879 in Paris , † June 6, 1962 there ), was a French stage and film actor .

Live and act

Dax joined the stage at the turn of the century and performed at the following Parisian theaters until the outbreak of World War II: the Théâtre du Gymnase, the Théâtre du Vaudeville, the Théâtre des Variétés, Théâtre Fémina, the Théâtre de la Michodière and the Théâtre des Celestins. The pieces in which he could be seen during this period include Le Détour , L'Âge d'aimer , Mademoiselle Josette, ma femme , Le Scandale de Monte-Carlo , Le Passe-partout , Suzette , La Maison de danses , L'Institut de Beauté , Le Tribun , Le Reflet , Après l'amour , Le Valet maître and Fascicule noir .

In the first decade of the 20th century, when cinematography was still in its infancy, Jean Dax came across film. Until the outbreak of the First World War, Dax received a plethora of supporting and leading roles in mostly short productions for the Pathé company . The war largely interrupted Dax's career from 1915 to 1918, but by 1920 he continued his film work unabated. At the end of the silent film era, in 1928/29, the Frenchman went to Germany for three film productions and was a film partner in Berlin for the screen divas Lil Dagover , Käthe von Nagy and Olga Chekhova .

At the beginning of the sound film era, in the early 1930s, Dax was also seen in the French versions of German film originals ( Ariane, Gloria, Der Kongreß tanzt and Kiki ). In later years, his roles gradually became smaller and, with the exception of his appearance as Emperor Franz-Joseph I in Anatole Litvak's imperial and imperial love drama Mayerling , an overwhelming public success in 1936, also less significant until Dax finally ceased his film work and his theater work in 1939 .
