action

Germany, mid-19th century. Amadäus Beck is a scruffy old man whom his relatives love more than anything, even if only for one reason: for he has money, a lot. And so the greedy relatives, including several great-nephews, cannot wait for the lively old man to finally bless the time. Only great-nephew Justus Haeberlin, a poor and good-natured drip who has a moderate income on his income as an insurance employee, does not seem to be interested in the millions of the suspicious, old miser. He is a friendly idealist, good-hearted, but also not very simple-minded and, because of his belief in the good in people, is viewed by his own relatives as a huge fool. Great-uncle Amadäus does not care, he is only impressed by the greed, which is only not discernible in Justus, and therefore appoints the humble youth as the sole heir of his fortune.

The relatives are horrified. Then the old man actually dies, and Justus doesn't know what to do with the inheritance at first. Finally, he sees the relatives, hungry for his money, and decides in the goodness of his heart to give generously to all the related supplicants who are now running in the door for him. Soon Justus will be just as poor as before. But now the "dear" relatives show their true colors: not only that they have plundered him, they now finally declare him a fool, who does not have to be very clear in the upper room, and instruct him in an asylum. But right here, at the supposed low point of his life, the gate should finally meet happiness from a pure heart: In the form of an American who not only falls in love with him, but also frees him from the institution. With their help, Justus Haeberlin regains possession of his carelessly given inheritance.

Production notes

The Dummkopf was made in 1920 in the Berlin Rex Film Atelier on Müllerstrasse at the corner of Sellerstrasse. The six-act act with a length of 2,495 meters passed the film censorship on December 22, 1920 and was released for the youth. The premiere took place on January 7, 1921 in the Tauentzienpalast .

The film structures come from the hands of Willi A. Herrmann and Friedrich Winkler-Tannenberg.

Oskar Kalbus ' Vom Werden German Filmkunst wrote: “Lupu Pick is a director who loves restraint and has always made little of himself. We owe it to him for the film adaptation of Fulda's stage work 'Der Dummkopf' (1921) - a showpiece of cinematic art. In this film, Paul Heidemann played the soulful idealist who had moved into the Biedermeier period. "

criticism

Paimann's film lists came to the conclusion: “Material extremely subtle, game, scenery and photos excellent. An exclusive picture (for a fine audience). "
