The world without a mask is a German film from 1934. Directed by Harry Piel, who also played the leading role. With a clear temporal reference that is typical for Piel, the strip depicts the notions of approaching television. This had long been recognizable in its preliminary stages, not least at the radio exhibitions not only in Berlin , but also made known to the general public. The spread of the medium alone was a long time coming. The premiere took place on March 9, 1934.

action

The inventor Tobias Bern, a likable idiot loner, becomes acquainted with Harry, his neighbor, by chance. Both live in a Berlin apartment building without work and without a fixed income. Both decide to join Dr. Bern's invention of wireless television image transmission was a success. The aim is to participate in a competition. Television should finally see its breakthrough. So far, however, the large electronics companies have only offered astronomically expensive individual copies of televisions.

Harry takes on the job of fundraising so that the invention can be completed on time for the competition. In doing so, he runs into the industrialist Costa. Hubert von Meyerinck creates this entirely in line with the perception of time. The international businessman combines everything that makes a fellow human unappealing. He is vain, arrogant, instinctual and selfish. Also dishonest and immoral. He is surrounded by his "sleazy" French servant Jean. When Costa learns of the potential of the new invention from Berlin, he tries everything to prevent its completion and ultimately participation in the television competition. There is a happy ending: the new people's television receiver will make the new medium accessible to everyone for 250 RM.

criticism

"An exhilarating bravura piece between fairy tales and adventure."
