action

The young Ingrid has built a reputation as a snake dancer. One day she falls in love with the explorer Hjalmar. Her impresario John doesn't like this at all. He's madly jealous and doesn't shy away from any lousy trick to break the two lovers apart again. In the vaudeville theater, where Ingrid appears with her dangerous animals, he provokes a risky incident that just ends well.

Meanwhile, Hjalmar has left for a geographic society congress. Here he is commissioned with an expedition to the polar sea . While the explorer makes final preparations, John arranges for one of Ingrid's venomous snakes to be smuggled into Hjalmar's house. When Hjalmar returns from Congress, Ingrid warned him of a possible attack at the last minute. Of course she noticed the loss of one of her snakes. When John furiously realizes that his devious attempt has failed, he throws himself into Hjalmar in a fit of anger. But he is bitten by the very snake that was supposed to kill Hjalmar and dies.

Ingrid wants to distance himself from the events of the last few days and asks Hjalmar to take her on his upcoming expedition. But a dramatic incident occurs on the polar expedition, Hjalmar and Ingrid are the only survivors who are able to save themselves in a cave in the middle of the ice world. Soon the provisions threaten to run out, the two lovers can now only hope for the message in a bottle they initiated. Soon they are half frozen and emaciated when a rescue team goes to look for them.

Production notes

The white horror was created in March 1917 in the Union studio in Berlin-Tempelhof as well as in Berlin and the surrounding area (exterior photos). Further photos were taken in the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg. The buildings were designed by Ernst Lubitsch's long-time film architect Kurt Richter .

It had a length of four files at 1096 meters, about 53 minutes. After the censorship test and a three meter shortening, the film was banned from youth (No. 41264). The Reich film censorship renewed the youth ban on September 19, 1921 (No. 4264). The premiere of The White Terror took place in December 1917.
