Theodor Thenn

Theodor Thenn (born January 28, 1842 in Augsburg , † November 4, 1919 in Beilngries ) was a German physician, local researcher and archaeologist .

Life

Thenn studied medicine in Erlangen and Berlin, received his doctorate in 1867 and worked as a general practitioner from 1868 and as a district doctor from 1889. From 1905 he held the title of "Medical Councilor", and in 1915 he retired. In 1904 he was made an honorary citizen of Beilngries for his services.

Services

Thenn was the typical case of a “home stag” who carried out archaeological excavations with great effort but without scientific methodology. Some of his publications were made anonymously or only from the estate. Despite these formal shortcomings, it achieved a great reputation and wide response. Initial criticism from scientific archeology was later put into perspective. Rather, his extensive finds were one reason why scientific archeology turned its attention to the landscape around Beilngries in the post-war period.
