A black man saves him from drowning and with it the important documents that the German carries with him. But then it turns out that behind this mask of the black is his former American comrade. However, this alleged US-American turns out to be a German who helps to bring his stranded compatriot back home safely.
Production notes
His mortal enemy emerged in the second half of 1917, the year the USA entered the First World War , and shows clearly patriotic and USA-critical traits.
The five-act film, subtitled Detective Adventure in the Jungles , was censored in February 1918 and premiered in July of that year.
The film is one of those works in which Piel has not yet been in front of the camera, but exclusively directed. His mortal enemy, however, shows how early Piel served the action film and adventure genre, for which he would also become famous and popular as an actor from 1919.
The later silent film star Marga Lindt still appeared here under her real name Margot Lindt. His mortal enemy was likely her screen debut.
