action

Renée, the young, attractive wife of the older and wealthy doll manufacturer Dumontier, who in particular invents talking dolls himself, is dissatisfied with her marriage. She feels patronized by her husband. At the same time, she is courted by the elegant and charming, but equally fearful and boring Sérigny, who likes to pretend to be a hero in front of her. Dumontier is fully aware of the situation and tells Sérigny that he is looking for a husband for his wife, but if he finds that she should have a relationship, he would shoot the rival immediately.

After an argument with Dumontier, Renée finally accepts Sérigny's invitation to a rendezvous in his Parisian love nest. Unfortunately for Sérignys, she already looks cool when she arrives and remains aloof. Then a burglar, Durand, appears who wants to steal a valuable painting from the apartment. Durand is the type of man Renée has a crush on. He is bold but goal-oriented. He's a criminal, but a gentleman. The burglar persuades Renée not to jeopardize her marriage for a coward like Sérigny, and reproaches Sérigny for breaking into the marriage of a friend and trying to steal his wife, which is much worse than a painting from a stranger to steal. After the burglar disappears again, the young woman leaves her admirer in the certainty that she has saved her marriage.

A few days later, a New York doll dealer named Hutkins announced himself to Dumontier. When the latter arrives in the presence of Renée and Serigny, the two recognize the burglar Durand. Renée once again finds this charming, unconventional, bold - in short: extremely attractive, and so he manages to persuade her to meet in secret. When Dumontier shows up at this meeting, he does not shoot the rival, but releases his wife from the insight that she has found a man in Durand according to her ideas.

Reactions to the film

Burglar was planned by the UFA as a new sensational success after the successful film Die Drei von der Gasstelle (1930), which is why many actors in this film were hired again. Of the three from the gas station , only Oskar Karlweis was missing , the main actress Lilian Harvey acted again as the main character, Kurt Gerron was made to dance again and this time Gertrud Wolle played the serious Hortense. With Hanns Schwarz , a director was engaged, under whose direction the dream couple Fritsch / Harvey had already acted. The expected success did not materialize, however.

Others

Sidney Bechet also appears in the film with a musical performance that is modeled on the one in the Palm Hall in Haus Vaterland .
