The Baltic marsh orchid ( Dactylorhiza baltica ) belongs to the genus of orchids ( Dactylorhiza ) in the family of orchids . Synonyms are Dactylorhiza longifolia and Dactylorhiza majalis subsp. longifolia .

The Baltic orchid is a perennial , herbaceous plant, the flowering individuals of which reach heights of growth between 15 and 70 centimeters. Unlike the broad-leaved orchid ( Dactylorhiza majalis ), the spotted leaves are clearly elongated - hence the epithet longifolia . The inflorescence is dense. It is not uncommon for there to be over 50 flowers on a plant. The lip is three-lobed, the middle lobe is significantly longer than the side lobes. In contrast to other species of the genus, all three lobes are not pointed, but rounded.

The flowering period is May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60 or 80.

Distribution and location

The plant reaches its western limit of distribution in the Baltic States , to the east its area extends to Central Asia. This species can be found in low moors with soils rich in limestone or alkaline , on wet meadows and sometimes also on dry meadows. The plant is tolerant of partial shade. In Germany, it grows in salt marshes on the Baltic coast.
