Lars Å. Hanson

Lars Åke Hanson (born August 10, 1934 in Naverstad ) is a Swedish immunologist and pediatrician .

Life

Hanson studied medicine at the University of Gothenburg (Sahlgrenska), with a degree (MD) and a doctorate in 1961. From 1961 he was an assistant professor, from 1977 professor of immunology and in the same year became head of clinical immunology at the University of Gothenburg. In 2000 he was retired.

In 1958 he was at the Institut Pasteur in Paris , from 1962 to 1963 at Rockefeller University and 1979 to 1980 (as Fogarty Scholar) at the National Institutes of Health . He was also visiting professor at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (1985), the Institute of Child Health in London (1987), the Scripps Research Foundation and Clinic (1989), the University of Hong Kong (1997) and the Northern Hospital in Shenyang in China (2001).

In 1981 he received the Robert Koch Prize . He also received the Oscar Medin Prize, the Andres Year Prize in Oslo (1988), the Prize of the Japanese Society for Inflammation (1986), the Elander Prize (1996, Gothenburg), the Medal of Merit of the City of Gothenburg (2000 ), the Nutricia International Award (2004), the Macy György Prize (2004), the Amningshjälpens Bröstpris (Stockholm 2005). He is Honorary Consul of Costa Rica .

He is a member of the Argentine Academy of Sciences (1978), the Norwegian Academy of Sciences (1999) and the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg (1978). He is also a founding member of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (1996).

Hanson dealt in particular with the immunology of embryos and newborns and examined the role of breast milk in building up the immune system. He has published over 700 articles and is the author and editor of 23 books. Until 2006 he supervised 79 doctoral students in Gothenburg.
