Harald Heckmann

Harald Heckmann (born December 6, 1924 in Dortmund , Germany ) is a German musicologist .

Life

Heckmann studied musicology in Freiburg im Breisgau with Reinhold Hammerstein , Hermann Zenck and Wilibald Gurlitt as well as art history with Kurt Bauch , German literary history with Walther Rehm and history with Gerd Tellenbach and Gerhard Ritter . During his studies he became a member of the AMV Alt-Straßburg Freiburg ( Special Houses Association ). He received his doctorate in 1952 , was assistant to Wilibald Gurlitt until 1954 , worked on the concise dictionary of musical terminology at the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and taught Protestant church music history and hymnology at the Freiburg University of Music .

In 1954 he was commissioned to set up the German Music History Archive in Kassel, which he directed until 1971 and which is overseen by the Music History Commission . From 1971 until his retirement in 1991 he was director of the German Broadcasting Archive in Frankfurt am Main, a foundation of the ARD .

Voluntary functions

From 1959 to 1974, Heckmann was first general secretary, then until 1977 president of the International Association of Music Libraries, Music Archives and Music Documentation Centers (international name: Association International des Bibliothèques Musicales, or AIBM for short). After his presidency he was named honorary president of the association. Between 1960 and 1980 he was also secretary, then until 2004 President of the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM), where he is now also Honorary President. From 1971 to 2002 Heckmann was a member of the German Music History Commission. In 1972 he was one of the founders of the Répertoire International d'Iconographie Musicale (RIdIM) and was its vice-president until 1989. He was also co-founder in 1969 and until 1992 Vice President of the Répertoire Internationale de Littérature Musicale (RILM). From 1990 to 2003 he was President of the International Schubert Society and has been an honorary member there ever since. From 1985 to 1991 Heckmann was a member of the library committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Heckmann has been a member since 1975 and from 1982 to 1992 was chairman of the music advisory board of the German library and a member of its administrative board.

From 1983 to 2009, together with Gerhard Mantel, he was responsible for the chamber music programs of the Robert Schumann Society in Frankfurt am Main. Heckmann received the Kassel City Medal in 1979, the Golden Mozart Pin from the International Mozarteum Foundation in 1988 and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2000 .
