The Sótano del Barro is a burglary doline in the Sierra Gorda biosphere reserve in the northern part of the Mexican state of Querétaro .

location

The Sótano de Barro is located near the village of Santa María de los Cocos in the municipality ( municipio ) Arroyo Seco in the northwest of the limestone mountains of the Sierra Gorda at an altitude of approx. 1860 m above sea level. d. The closest town is Jalpan de Serra, about 30 km (as the crow flies) in a south-easterly direction .

The Sótano de Barro is an approximately 1.5 million year old and approx. 420 m long, 200 m wide and 455 m deep collapse doline . With 15 million cubic meters, it is one of the world's largest sinkholes.

fauna

The Sótano de Barro is home to colonies of parrots and other birds, which can be seen there especially early in the morning. Collared peccaries and a few pumas also live in the surrounding bush forest .
