from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Music Documentation Centers (abbreviation IAML , and International Association of Bibliothèques, Archives et Center de Documentation Musicaux (abbreviation, date: IAML ) and International Association of Music Libraries (abbreviation, date: IVMB )) is a trilingual organization founded in Paris in 1951 , whose members mainly consist of libraries with music departments, music college libraries , radio and orchestral archives, university institutes, music documentation centers as well as music publishers and music dealers. The organization is intended to promote the activities of the members and organize cooperation on an international level.

history

The IAML was founded in Paris in 1951 in coordination with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and is registered with UNESCO as an international association. So there is no music section at IFLA; but the IAML is there with liaison officers z. B. for cataloging issues. Two conferences that preceded the founding year in Florence in 1949 and Lüneburg in 1950, in which around 60 music librarians and musicologists from twelve countries participated, prepared the future tasks of the association. Representatives from Belgium, Germany, England, France, Italy and Switzerland played an important role in the future development of the association. In 1952 the association had 224 members in 20 countries.

Members

Members are predominantly institutions, such as public and academic libraries with music departments, music college libraries, radio and orchestra archives, university institutes, research institutions, music documentation centers as well as music publishers and music dealers. Accordingly, the association is divided into specialist groups, commissions and working groups that hold their meetings at the annual conferences in another country. The proportion of private individuals, predominantly music librarians and musicologists, varies in the member states. As the number of members increased, country groups were gradually founded, the organizational framework of which is still given today by the international statutes and rules of procedure of the association.

The association has almost 1900 members in 53 countries, most of them from Europe and North America, but also from Japan, Australia and New Zealand. There are currently 22 country groups, of which the USA is at the top with 247 members, followed by Germany with 221, Spain with 184 and Italy with 171 members at the international level. Other members come from the countries of the former Soviet Union, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Memberships

The association is a member of IFLA, the International Council on Archives (ICA), the European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA) and the International Music Council (IMC). The International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) and the International Association of Music Information Centers (IAMIC) were originally founded by the association as their specialist groups. However, both became independent in the early 1990s. However, joint conferences are occasionally held.

purpose

The aim of the association is to promote the activities of the members and to strengthen and organize cooperation on an international level, especially in the field of music bibliography and music documentation . Furthermore, the cultural significance of music libraries should be placed in the foreground. Furthermore, the work on internationally valid standards should be deepened and communicated. International interlibrary loan also plays a major role. Further topics are vocational training and further education and maintenance. The association was involved in the preparation of the ISBD- PM and NBM (International Standard Bibliographic Description - Printed Music and - Nonbook Material) within the framework of IFLA . In cooperation with the ISO , the association has been actively involved in the establishment and development of the ISMN ( International Standard Music Number ) and it works with other standards such as the ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code).

Projects and publications

Together with the IMS (International Musicological Society), the association promotes and coordinates the following so-called 4R projects.

These four projects have their respective headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, New York, Paris and Parma. National centers work with these international centers, where the data is edited. These are available in printed form or on CD-ROM. Internet access is provided in some cases.

Together with IMS, the association also looks after publications such as the reprint and facsimile series “Documenta Musicologica”.

As an information sheet for the members of the association, the "Bulletin d'information" appeared in 1952 and 1953, and since 1954 the magazine "Fontes Artis Musicae" with articles from the association's work, advertisements of new publications and reviews in one of the three official languages, often with additional abstracts in at least one of the other two languages. While German and French were still spoken at international conferences until the mid-1980s, English has now established itself as the conference language.

Board of Directors, committees

The association is led by a board consisting of the president, four vice-presidents (with specific tasks), the general secretary, the treasurer and the past president. The specialist groups and commissions are headed by a chairman, a vice-chairman and a secretary, while the working groups set up for certain projects are only chaired by a chairman. All functionaries are elected for three years. The Publications Committee, the Constitution Committee and the Copyright Committee as well as other bodies support the work of the Board of Directors in the areas mentioned.

An important decision-making body of the association is the Council, which, in addition to the board of directors and the chairmen of the specialist groups and commissions, includes the presidents of the country groups and the representatives from countries without country groups. However, interested guests are also permitted as observers without voting rights.

At the international level, German representatives helped build the association from the start. In 1952 the first national conference took place in Mainz. At that time the German group of countries had 32 members. From 1955 institutions of the GDR began to join the association and to work with the RISM and RILM. 1959 a separate GDR country group with 24 members was founded; it used the German variant IVMB instead of the French abbreviation AIBM from around 1962. The following colleagues from Germany are currently represented in IAML committees: Thomas Kalk ( Treasurer ), Jutta Lambrecht ( Vice Chair of the Broadcasting and Orchestra Libraries Branch ), Jürgen Diet ( Secretary of the Commission on Service and Training ). Honorary President of the IVMB: Harald Heckmann .

Country group Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the association was run as an unregistered association for a long time; until 2017 it used the French abbreviation AIBM. The abbreviation IAML Germany has been used in Germany since then. It was not until the beginning of 1992 that the association was registered as an association and it was granted non-profit status.

At the end of 1990, the former IVMB country group GDR dissolved for administrative reasons; the majority of its members at the time joined the AIBM group for the Federal Republic of Germany. There were even some new members who had not previously been members of the IVMB country group GDR. In consultation with the last incumbent board of the IVMB country group GDR, the board of the AIBM group Federal Republic of Germany was expanded to include the position of vice president, to which a board member of the former IVMB country group GDR was elected in 1991.

Since 1991 national conferences have been held in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Erlangen, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Weimar, Coburg, Aachen, Dresden, Leipzig, Essen, Halle / Saale, Rostock, Hanover and Munich. As in Weimar, the conference in Leipzig was held together with the IASA country group Germany / German-speaking Switzerland . The number of participants is 100 to 120 participants; if the IASA participates with up to 150 participants. Further conference locations were Stuttgart (2006), Freiburg (2007), Bremen (2008), Dresden (2009), Essen (2010), Hamburg (2011), Frankfurt am Main (2012) and Berlin (2013), Nuremberg (2014), Stuttgart (2015), Detmold (2016), Münster (2017).
