The IASA country group Germany / Switzerland e. V. is the group of countries in Germany and Switzerland of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives - IASA). This was founded in Amsterdam in 1969 and is represented as an “ NGO ” (non-governmental, non-governmental organization) in UNESCO .
Purpose of the association
The aim of the IASA country group Germany / Switzerland is to promote cooperation between all archives that store audio and, increasingly, audio-visual documents. The IASA deals with all issues related to the work of institutional and significant private collections and archives: acquisition, documentation, custody, use and preservation. Copyright and discography are just as much a part of the spectrum of the IASA's activities as the maintenance of recording , editing and playback techniques or the development of recommendations for the long-term preservation of sound recordings .
The purpose of the country group as an association is to discuss the work results of the international technical commissions of the IASA at regional and national level and, conversely, to pass on questions and suggestions for future work to these specialist bodies and the board of the IASA. The group of countries is primarily concerned with involving institutions and private individuals who collect audio documents and related materials or who are interested in the stated tasks and goals.
history
It was founded on April 25, 1990 as part of the meeting of Section 7 of the Association of German Archivists in Wiesbaden. The first chairman was Jean-Claude Hayoz from the Documentation Center of the Swiss Federal Assembly . Other board members were Monika Brandenstein ( Broadcasting of the GDR ) and Felix Kresing-Wulf (Deutsche Welle).
Confirmation as an IASA Regional Branch by the General Assembly of the IASA took place on May 7, 1990 in Ottawa . The first official annual general meeting as the IASA country group was held on April 30, 1991 as part of the conference of Section 7 in the Phonothek in Vienna . The first independent annual conference followed in October 1991 at the invitation of Deutsche Welle in Cologne .
Since autumn 1998 the group of countries has appeared on the internet on the website of the Klaus Kuhnke Archive in Bremen. Its managing director Ulrich Duve acted as webmaster. In the spring of 1999, a website was launched at www.iasa-online.de.
There has been a close exchange of experiences with the Austrian IASA group Medien Archive Austria, especially since the joint annual meeting in Vienna in 2008. Both country groups have been highly regarded as particularly active sections within the international IASA for years.
The group of countries has its headquarters at the location of the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main.
structure
In addition to the general assembly as the highest organ of the association, which takes place once a year during the annual meeting, there is also the board of directors according to the statutes. Ulrich Duve from the Klaus Kuhnke Archive in Bremen has been chairman since November 2016 . The deputy chairpersons are Claus Peter Gallenmiller (Society for Historical Sound Carriers, Vienna), Katrin Abromeit ( Filmmuseum Potsdam ) and Jochen Rupp ( German National Library ). Further board members are Sarah Seibicke ( University of Regensburg ), Olaf Kosinsky and Pio Pellizzari.

Projects and meetings

Due to the restructuring of the FG7 conferences, this working session last took place in 2000.
Company Discographies of Historical Sound Carriers (FDHT)
On the initiative of Rainer Lotz , the project “Company Discographies of Historical Sound Carriers (FDHT)” started in 1997 , which, after a difficult start-up, found a home in a modified form in the Swiss National Sound Archives in Lugano.
Sound & smoke
As an information organ for its members, the IASA country group has been issuing the publication “Schall & Rauch” with specialist articles, conference contributions and conference reports since 1998. The first issue in May 1998 was published by Birgit-Lotz-Verlag Bonn . In previous years, the group of countries used the Capitolium, the newsletter of the Swiss National Sound Archives, to inform its members. The first editor-in-chief at Schall & Rauch was Markus Erni, while Klemens Helmholz was responsible for production. From November 2000 the team was strengthened by Isabel Bräuer. Ulrich Duve (2001) was followed in 2005 by Rudolf Müller as editor-in-chief. It is given to members free of charge and is available in various libraries.
Vinyl disc
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the association, a unique sound document was produced in 2010 with an acoustic cross section of some member archives. It is a vinyl disc , a combination of a CD and a special record. It consists of two interconnected layers. The silver layer contains the digital information, the upper black layer is produced using a vinyl matrix and contains a record groove that can be played on turntables (33 1/3 min-1). A foam adapter to reduce the inner diameter was included so that the vinyl disc can be fixed on the platter.
