The Mendelssohn-Remise is a former coach house of the Mendelssohn family in the Jägerstraße in Berlin district of Mitte , which now houses a permanent exhibition about the Mendelssohn family and is used for events.

history

In 1890, the Mendelssohn banking house, which has been based since 1815, built a ticket hall with brick vaults and granite pillars on the property at Jägerstraße 51, which was soon converted into a carriage for the family's vehicle fleet. The property was acquired by family member Joseph Mendelssohn in 1839 and was also used for living.

After the bank was liquidated by the National Socialists in 1938, the property had to be sold to the Reich Ministry of Finance in 1939 . The architect Max Taut fundamentally rebuilt the building in May 1948 so that it could be used by DEFA and the Film Headquarters. In the GDR era, the remise was also used as a garage and car repair shop and the originally three-story building was expanded by two floors increased. After the fall of the Wall , the building was restored in 1989, returned to the heirs of the Mendelssohn family in 1998 and then became the property of Berliner Ärzteversorgung . In 2004 the Mendelssohn Remise, restored to its original structure, was shown to the public as part of the 18th Jewish Culture Days.

In April 2015 the bronze busts of Fanny Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy by the artist Lore Plietzsch were set up in front of the Remise.
