Joël Emanuel Goudsmit also: Joel Emmanuel Goudsmit (born June 13, 1813 in Leiden ; † March 17, 1882 ibid) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

The son of Emanuel Levie Goudsmit (* 1785 in Rijssen, † November 16, 1872 in New York) and his wife Aleida (Alida, Alijda) Joseph van Raalte (* July 24, 1791 in Deventer, † in New York) was his Parents raised strictly Jewish. During his first training period he devoted himself to the study of classical literature and in 1829 moved to the University of Leiden . It was here that Cornelis Jacobus van Assen had a great influence on him. He also attended the lectures of Johan Rudolf Thorbecke and then concentrated on studying Roman law. As a student he had striven for the unity of the student groups and had given lectures on Roman law. On May 12, 1842 he received his doctorate with the treatise De notis Pauli et Ulpiani in Papinianum to the doctor of law. He then worked as a lawyer in Leiden. As a city attorney, he had won several lawsuits and had also written legal papers. On December 31, 1858, he was appointed professor of law at the Leiden Academy by royal resolution, with the teaching assignment for Roman law. On March 25, 1859, he gave his inaugural address de studio iuris romani hac quoque aetate in patria nostra excolendo .

He was the first Jewish Dutchman to teach at the Leiden University. His life's work consisted in bringing a uniform order into Roman law. In 1862 he received honorable appointments to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam , the Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Law in Madrid . He also became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1861 he became a member of the local council in Leiden and other institutions there. Here he also became co-founder and chairman of the Dutch Lawyers Association. In 1873 he made a trip to the USA, which travel impressions he published. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in 1870/71 . He put this task down with the speech de variis causis quibus fit, ut populorum leges ab eorum moribus discrepent . His main work is his pandect system, of which the first part appeared in 1866, the second sequel followed in 1880 and the third sequel could no longer be completed. He was chairman of the board of trustees and examinations committee of the Dutch Israelite seminary. He also stood up for the Jews persecuted in Romania. He died of a nervous disease.

From his with Renetta Netje Vos (* July 27, 1822 in Leiden, † November 30, 1911 ibid), the daughter of Benjamin Hartog Vos (1797–1868) and his wife Geertruida Izak van Raalte (1803–1857), on 21.
