After attending school in Harlingen, he studied law and literature at the University of Franeker from 1805. After he had received his first lessons in ancient literature and history from Everwinus Wassenbergh (1742-1826) and Jan Willem de Crane (1758-1842) and natural law from Johan Hendrik Swildens (1745-1809), the legal scholar Hendrik Willem Tydeman became his most formative teacher. Under this he defended on October 13, 1809 the legal treatise Disputatio jur. lit. de M. Tullii Ciceronis oratione per Aulo Cluentio Avito .

He then became a lawyer in The Hague and gained more and more recognition over time, which brought him the award of a knight from the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1814 he was hired as secretary to Prince Frederick , whom he taught and accompanied on his educational trips. After the prince had completed his studies at the University of Leiden in 1814, he traveled with the latter to Paris in 1815.

In April 1820 he became a second class councilor. On May 28, 1821 he was appointed professor of law at the University of Leiden, whereupon he took up his post on September 29, 1821 with the speech de studio Juris Romani, hoc ipso tempore diligenter tuendo and lectured on Roman and current law. In Leiden he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1830/31 . He put this task down with the speech Oratio de immoderata libertatis cupiditate Europae calamitatum effectrice (Leiden 1831). He then became an extraordinary councilor again and finally an ordinary councilor and advisor to Prince Frederik. Van Assen became the commander of the Order of the Oak Crown and a member of many domestic and foreign learned societies. His membership of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sciences, which he resigned on February 22, 1824, and of the Literature Department of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam on February 23, 1855, should be mentioned here.
