Gauscelin de Jean

Gauscelin de Jean (* in Cahors ; † August 3, 1348 in Avignon ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Bertrand de Jean and Marguerite Duèse from the family of the Lords of Saint-Félix en Quercy , a sister of Pope John XXII.

Since 1312 Canon of the Metropolitan Chapter of Reims, he was by his uncle Pope John XXII. on December 17, 1316 elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro . In 1317 he became Archdeacon of Northampton and Vice Chancellor of the Roman Church . He was also treasurer of Lichfield from 1317. Together with Cardinal Luca Fieschi , he became a papal legate for England , Scotland and Ireland in 1317 , where he was able to mediate peace between the kingdoms. From 1317 prebendary of Driffield and Louth, he became papal legate in 1319 in France. Here he was able to mediate a peace between France and Flanders , which had been at war for 20 years.

Since December 18, 1327 Cardinal Bishop of Albano , he became a major penitentiary of the Catholic Church in 1332 . He took part in the conclave of 1334, but not the conclave of 1342.
