Giovanni Colonna (cardinal, around 1295)
Giovanni Colonna (* around 1295; † July 3, 1348 in Avignon ) was a friend and supporter of Francesco Petrarch as an Italian cardinal of the 14th century .
Life
Giovanni Colonna was a younger son of Stefano Colonna the Elder and Insula Calcedonio, thus a nephew of Cardinal Pietro Colonna († 1326). Among other things, he was provost of the Mainz cathedral chapter , cantor at the cathedral chapter of Bayeux and apostolic protonotary . On the consistory of December 18, 1327 he was by Pope John XXII. appointed Cardinal Deacon of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . He took part in the conclave of 1334, the election of Benedict XII. , as well as the conclave of 1342, the election of Clement VI. At the second conclave he took over the leadership of the Italian cardinals who wanted to win the pope for a return to Rome. In the same year he was appointed Archpriest of the Lateran Basilica and the Cathedral of Marseille (Sainte-Marie-Majeure). He gave important impulses for the decision of the Pope to send Franciscans on a mission to Armenia .
Giovanni Colonna was the employer and a close friend of Francesco Petrarch, as well as the employer of the Flemish music theorist Lodewijk Heyligen (Ludovicus Sanctus), who also belonged to the Petrarch Society. He died of the plague on July 3, 1348 in Avignon .
