The Bistum Trebinje-Mrkan ( kroat. And bosn. Trebinjsko-mrkanska Biskupija , latin et Dioecesis Tribuniensis Marcanensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Bosnia and Herzegovina , which comprises the southeastern part of the country. The bishopric of Mostar is responsible for the administration of the diocese. Since July 23, 1992 Ratko Perić took over the administrative tasks of the diocese of Trebinje-Mrkan as Apostolic Administrator .

History of the Trebinje-Mrkan Diocese

The Latin Diocese of Tribuniensis was established by Pope Gregory V in the second half of the 10th century . In 1240/42 the area was destroyed by the Tatars . The bishop found refuge in the city of Dubrovnik, besieged by the Mongols . The establishment of the diocese of Marcanensis goes back to 1361 and Pope Innocent VI. back. Under Pope Clement VII , the two dioceses were united in 1391. In the Ottoman period (1400-1800) the bishops ruled their diocese mostly from the fortified and safe city of Dubrovnik. Nikola Ferić was the last bishop of Trebinje-Mrkan. After his death on May 30, 1819, the diocese was directly subordinate to the Holy See , the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide , and a member of the cathedral chapter of Dubrovnik was appointed as the apostolic delegate .

After the circumscription of the parishes and the entire territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina always with seven own parishes was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Dubrovnik . This condition lasted until 1890.

Pope Leo XIII.

The Holy See issued under Pope Leo XIII. on July 8, 1890 the bull Ex hac augusta , in which the administration of the diocese was transferred to the bishops of the Mostar-Duvno diocese . The then bishop of Mostar-Duvno, Paškal Buconjić , became the new apostolic administrator. In 1891 there were partial changes or more precise borders within the diocese.

Statistics from 1937

In 1937 the diocese had ten parishes and two deaneries . The number of believing Catholics was: 25,126, mostly Croatians . There were also 13 parish priests, 11 nuns and 2 sister houses. Together with the diocese of Mostar-Duvno, it covered an area of approximately 12,229 square kilometers.

The period 1941–1945

During the Second World War , the diocese community suffered primarily from the terror of the Serbian-Montenegrin Chetniks .

In the period 1991–1995

It is worth mentioning that with the attack by the Serbian-Montenegrin armed forces on the village of Ravno in the autumn of 1991, the outbreak of war in today's territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina was already six months before the official start of the war, or the outbreak of war could be interpreted from a Croatian point of view. Since 1995 parts of the diocese have been on the territory of the Republika Srpska .

Dean's offices

The two deaneries that still exist today are:

1. Trebinje with the four parishes Trebinje, Donji Stolac , Ravno , and Trebinja . According to the 1937 schematic , there were a total of 8,511 believers. The position of dean was not filled.

2. Stolac with the 6 parishes Donje Hrano , Gornje Hrano , Klepci , Prenj-Dubrava , Rotmilja and Stolac , with a total of 16,615 believers, according to the census from 1937.

Cathedral of the Nativity of Mary in Trebinje

cathedral

On June 7, 1884, the Church of the Birth of Mary, begun in 1880, was consecrated. In 1917/18 the church was renovated and painted stained glass windows were installed (Foundation of Respected Families from Trebinje). Plans from 1913 for two towers could not be realized. In 1928 a small bell tower was built next to the church. On the occasion of the millennium of the Diocese of Trebinje and the centenary of the city church, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, with the consent of Pope John Paul II, made it a cathedral by the Apostolic Administrator Pavao Žanić, Bishop of Mostar-Duvno . In 2000 the cathedral and tower were completely renovated.
