The Latin Diocese of Tribuniensis was established by Pope Gregory V in the second half of the 10th century . The establishment of the diocese of Marcanensis goes back to 1361 and Pope Innocent VI. back. Under Pope Clement VII , the two dioceses were united in 1391.

After the death of Bishop Nikola Feric in 1819, the Holy See no longer appointed a bishop; a member of the cathedral chapter of Dubrovnik was to administer the diocese as an apostolic delegate .

With an apostolic letter of September 12, 1839, Pope Gregory XVI. appoint the bishops of Dubrovnik as apostolic administrators for the diocese of Trebinje-Mrkan. With the papal bull Ex hac augusta Leo XIII. from July 5, 1881, the dioceses were reorganized and merged. So now Mostar-Duvno (- Trebinje e Mrkan ) emerged from the former four dioceses . In 1890 the Bishop of Mostar became the Apostolic Administrator of the Trebinje-Mrkan diocese.
