Life

The patrician son studied theology and canon law ; In 1710 he was ordained a priest . As a member of the cathedral chapter of Dubrovnik he was an official at the diocesan court, he was vicar of the Archbishop Giovanni Battista Conventati . He went to Rome, won the friendship of a cardinal and was on March 17, 1727 by Pope Benedict XIII. appointed Bishop of Trebinje-Mrkan. The approximately 3000, widely dispersed Catholics of his new diocese were pastored by four priests (missionaries of the Propaganda Fide ), there were no churches, only a few chapels. Bishop Bona turned to Rome in 1729 after a diocesan synod and asked the congregation for help.

Pope Clement XII. recognized his abilities, dismissed him as Bishop of Trebinje-Mrkan and placed him in the service of the Curia . He appointed him titular Archbishop of Cartagine on and sent him to Constantinople to set up a vicariate in the Ottoman capital. For health reasons he had to give up his work in 1736 and went back to Rome. In July 1737 he went to the court of King Louis XV as papal envoy . to Paris , but returned to Constantinople on July 8, 1738. Ill again, he had to leave the city in 1741. The Apostolic Vicariate of Constantinople was founded on April 15, 1742 by Pope Benedict XIV . On May 23, 1742 Archbishop Bona was appointed by the Pope as Apostolic Visitator . In this capacity he was again in the Ottoman capital in 1743. The spread of Freemasonry in Europe caused the Pope great concern, so he asked his "special envoy" Bona to take appropriate measures to contain it with the French government.

Towards the end of his life, Bona returned to his hometown, where he died on December 28, 1749 at the age of 63.
