The diocese of Sofia and Plovdiv ( Latin Dioecesis Sophiae et Philippopolis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Bulgaria . It is directly subordinate to the Holy See and is the only Catholic diocese in Bulgaria besides the Diocese of Nicopolis . The Catholic population comprises about 0.7% of the total population. The majority of Christians in Bulgaria belong to the Orthodox Church .
The current bishop has been Georgi Jowtschew since 1995 . The bishopric is in Plovdiv . A cathedral has now also been built in the center of Sofia .
history
In 1758, the Vicariate Apostolic Sofia and Plovdiv was established in Bulgaria . On March 3, 1979, it was elevated to a diocese.
